Health coverage

Here's a quick question out to anyone who might know: what is a reasonable expectation for a new faculty member in regards to family health benefits?

I'm assuming most institutions would provide access to health coverage for spouses and children. But what would that look like? We're trying to make some calculations regarding costs, and I'd like to be able to compare a reasonable expectation of what coverage might be under a faculty plan to what it might cost us on our own.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure what our exact costs are, but they're between 250-300 for a family of four. I actually think we could have 12 children and it would be the same. Our benefits are quite generous. I think out of pocket, we'd pay around 800 or so.

I assume you mean per month? Or do you mean per paycheck (what frequency)?

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here, AD. Do you want to know what our faculty plans cover and how much that costs us per month after the University puts in its contribution?

We have a really great HMO plan (and our area's small enough here that just about every doctor and dentist is included on the provider list). Co-payment for most things is 10%, although to be honest I've never paid for a thing yet (including labor and delivery). Prescriptions are around $7.00. The whole health plan (which includes basic dental) costs us $65/month for the entire family. We also have a supplemental dental plan that runs us $35/month for the whole family.

I am paid monthly; the entire family is covered under my plan, as Todd's is crappy at the law firm and REALLY REALLY expensive (i.e., $1500/month).

And of course there are life insurance, AD&D, short-term and long-term disability plans, as well as 403b and other retirement plans that we're part of.

Is that what you were looking for?

Oh, sorry--yes, per month.

Thanks, Laura.
Wow, Tracy, that actually sounds generous.

Let's hope the interdisciplinary post (a couple hours from you) comes through. It'd sure be nice to have some stability.

Ours is about $100/month for the family with dental another $20/mo. We opt for the coverage from the CC rather than my husband's company's because it was closer to $400/month.
